All my friends who have GPS have this model! I believe this is a testament to the performance and price this model represents. I finally bought a GPS receiver after buying a kayak. I wanted to know how much time we spend planning future trips and wanted to record our trips. It works well as such, but I also use it regularly in the car and on my road bike. I use a suction cup mount and it tracked my honeymoon train ride in Canada which was stuck in a coupe window and I'm amazed at how well it will work in an airliner window. Sure, it doesn't have the best display for in-car use, but that's not what this model was designed for. Garmin has better models for this, but you'll have to pay 6x or so. However, Legend has helped me a couple of times not to get lost and return to rarely visited places. and you can often find the features yourself quickly. Of course, some of the more advanced features, such as For example, creating a track using a map can become a bit cumbersome and is best done on a PC by loading the results into Legend. Given the complexity of this device, I'm sure any user can find nitpicks to worry about how certain things are done or what menu functions should appear in. Overall I'm very happy with how Legend works, although I could make a long list myself. However, these elements are rather small. For example, the trip computer screen is customizable, but it would be nice to be able to save different screens for later use when using the Legend for different applications. The antenna is a patch antenna and works best when the device is in a horizontal, face-up position. However, if it's hanging from a collar, it's in a very bad position. An additional external antenna would be nice (but would make the device more expensive). The built-in maps are pretty crude. I'm assuming I-95 is straight, but I think it's unforgivable that US1 crosses the wrong side of the Florida East Coast Railroad at Cocoa. Again, these are fairly small dots. The biggest problem with the Legend, while not the receiver itself, is the price of the accessories. Adding an extra mount (I have a suction cup and bike mounts), a cigarette lighter adapter and a map CD costs the same as the retail price of the Legend itself! What impresses me is that Garmin is constantly improving the software and making updates available for free on their website. There have been two updates in the year since I bought the Legend. When I first got it and turned it on after sitting in my hot car over the summer (it's not very practical in Florida to NEVER leave it in a hot car for a while) a message popped up saying the external power was off. and it turned off after 30 seconds! At that time I didn't have an external power source. If the device cools down, so be it. I sent it back to Garmin and they were nice and sent me a new one. Guess what? He did the same. But I see that the first update included a change to better detect when the external power fails. After the update there were no problems. It's a little disappointing that there were issues, but it's reassuring that the manufacturer has been helpful, constantly improving the product, and making these updates available to the consumer free of charge. Like I said, I think the Legend is a great device for the price. Vista is the next model in the eTrex range. If you go for it, you'll increase storage from 8MB to 24MB, add a compass and altimeter, but almost double the price. I would like to see a model priced in between these two, without a compass and altimeter but with more memory for downloadable maps e.g. 16MB or 24MB. Although there are always little things you can think of to improve this product, after a year of use I am very, very happy with my decision to buy the Garmin eTrex Legend and it is being used a lot.
