I seem to have had mine for over 8 years now. like when I put it on a hard surface. It turned out that the battery contacts are not strong enough to stay in contact with the batteries under all conditions. I sent it back to Garmin and they sent it back in working condition: it doesn't turn off when hit. But when you open the battery compartment, the contacts look like someone took a pair of pliers and bent them a couple of times to make better contact with the batteries: I could do that. Sure, it's just aesthetics, but when your new GPS's battery contacts look like a third grader bent them with pliers, it's frustrating to change batteries every time. Recently, the power cord connector on my Garmin 12V DC adapter started losing contact. this turns off the GPS: just like the problem with the battery contacts. The GPS is great, but whoever designs Garmin's electrical connectors and pins is really bad at their job.
