The blue pre-filter can remove particles down to three microns in size, while the white pads clean the water just as well. In most cases they are perfect for the Pro 3 line, but they will be too small for the XL and 2080, which I also have. In all cases, the pads remove dirt and keep the water clean. They can be washed in a bucket of aquarium water to avoid destroying colonized nitrifying bacteria and then reused, but it is recommended to replace the pads every 6-12 months depending on the fish you keep and yours filtering.
