Review on πŸ“ž Black OBi202 VoIP Phone Adapter - 2-Port Support for Google Voice, Fax, and Home/SOHO Phone Service by Becky Smith

They used to have a good OBi100/110 product. Now just a blackmail scheme

Unusable brick after a year. I am using OBI110. I was very happy with it because I could use my Google Voice account to make/receive calls. About 2 years ago I ordered an OBi202 just because it supports fax. As far as I know, the fax function was no better than the OBi110. What I didn't know before ordering OBi202 was that they had devised an elaborate method to extort money. Even though it's only $10/year, it's not mentioned anywhere when ordering. Both my OBI110 and OBi202 stopped working about a year ago, although I've never logged into the web interface (for OBI110) or obitalk.com to change any settings. When I finally managed to solve the problem, OBi110 doesn't offer an option to set up Google Voice. It looks like it's already set up and configured as I've never changed any of the settings. As with OBi202, it shows the device is online and set up with Google Voice, but it doesn't work. When I try to call, I hear "Device setup failed. Go to Opitalk.com and set up your device." I tried setting it up again but as soon as I click on Google Voice it returns to the support page and asks me to pay $10. No OBihai I'm not going to give you $10 a year because the only reason I bought this machine with the fax option was to use it probably once a year if I ever needed to send a fax I say once a year because I probably only need to send one fax a year at most. When I needed to send a fax today, you made me realize that I wasted my money buying your machine. If OBihai wants to use a subscription model, they should offer a SIP service what do you really offer for $10 a year other than allowing your users to use a third party service (google voice) which costs you nothing? I don't understand. Imagine you k You get a cable modem that deactivates after a year, and the modem manufacturer charges you $10 each year so you can use the cable modem you already paid for. It doesn't matter that it's only $10 - it's just not fair to your product. With this review I would like to warn those who might think that this device works the same as before. It is not. As for my decision to fax once a year? I found an Android app that lets you send a 5-page fax (or five 1-page faxes) for $2.50, which is a very reasonable solution.

Pros
  • High score for support and longevity from testers
Cons
  • Slightly torn
