Not the best initial impression

Was looking for a new motion-activated light to hang above my west-facing garage door.my existing battery-powered light was eating four C-cells a month. I thought that a solar light with a detached solar panel that could be placed on the garage's south-facing fascia might work well so I bought this one.I've found several issues with this unit. First, the model I received appears to be an updated unit with a button to cycle through the various modes of operation. The included instructions are for the previous model without the button so you have to guess what pressing the button does and what mode the light is in. Second, the holes for the mounting plates are too small for the included screws so you have to open them up with a drill. Not a big deal. Third, the box indicates the unit is waterproof but it doesn't appear to be.the hole where the wire enters the solar panel is oversize and completely unsealed so I had to backfill it with caulk. Fourth, the barrel connector on the power cable has a right-angle connector. If you plan (as I did) to run the wires inside the structure you'd need to drill a big gaping hole to pass the connector through. I ended up cutting the wire in half, passing the cut ends through the very small hole they require, then soldering/heatshrinking the ends back together inside the garage. The light's installed and after one evening it does appear to be working but we'll see how long it lasts. I live in upstate NY and i fear this unit's rather flimsy construction won't hold up long term.

Pros
  • Great item
Cons
  • The lights may not provide enough illumination during the winter months, when sunlight is scarce
