40GB works! How it worked for me 27 " iMac with Retina 5K display.
Used existing Apple 8GB RAM. The screen is facing down with the stalk of the large Apple logo pointing away from you. Begin Top slot and work your way down Install in this order Slot 1: 4GB Apple Slot 2: 16GB OWC Slot 3 4GB Apple Slot 4: 16GB OWC This worked for me ! If everything is done correctly your iMac will boot with no problems. Go to About This Mac, Storage. At the top you should see two 16GB slots. This worked for me too. Tried the reverse and got a prohibition sign on boot. Please see the pictures if it's confusing.
