I hesitated to go for these scrapers because people said they scratched the tank. Does the substrate matter? I have pebbles (vs sand) and haven't had any issues. And it removed the algae in seconds after MONTHS of scrubbing. I had a difficult pregnancy and gave birth via cesarean section in November. My aquarium sat for a good 5 months without a thorough cleaning (or, to be honest, a thorough cleaning) so I figured the algae were permanent for now. It didn't take any effort. I would recommend making small movements and wiping the blade frequently. I stuck to tiny downward movements because when I tried to go up it felt like it was rougher and could scratch the glass. No need to apply pressure, just let the blade do its job. I also disassembled mine after use as some comments mention rust. No water = no rust. The kit also includes a set of blades. Be careful when assembling and disassembling as these things are SHARP. And stay away from the corners of the tank. I highly recommend it.
