I don’t like using flash, but I often have to shoot in low light conditions, so I have long dreamed of a fast normal lens with an image stabilizer. And finally, Canon has released such a model. Hooray! A small test showed that in terms of sharpness this lens is about the level of the EF 50mm f/1.8. Some would say that this is terrible: a $1000 lens is as sharp as a $130 lens! But it's not. 50/1.8 is a very sharp lens. But with a very nasty focusing system . It was because of autofocus misses that he got a bad name. When manually focusing on LiveView with 10x magnification, the sharpness is excellent. Judging by laboratory tests that can be found on the Internet, at f / 2.8 this 35/2, 50 / 1.8 and, for example, 50 / 1.2L, which costs more than 1000 euros, go head to head in sharpness. But here we have a lens with a focal length that is less than the working distance (the distance from the bayonet to the matrix), for such it is much more difficult to get good sharpness .
- On a crop, it becomes a replacement for a 55 mm lens, i. E. may be considered normal. It is fast and has a stabilizer, so you can shoot without a flash even with a black man in a known place. The aperture has eight rounded blades, so that spots outside the field of sharpness do not have noticeable angles. Nimble and quiet USM, allowing manual focus adjustment at any time. However, even without correction, the lens focuses quite accurately. Suitable for full frame cameras, so when upgrading to Full Frame it will still be useful. The design makes it feel solid and reliable.
- Big and heavy. The front lens is almost not recessed into the body, so it is not difficult to damage it. Large thread diameter for filters, i. E. filters are expensive. The image stabilizer almost stops working in the event of reframing (focusing the center point on the desired object, then recomposing the frame). “They could have sewn into the software the recognition of such actions by the photographer and the restoration of stabilization after the movement stopped. By the way, I didn’t notice such a problem with a whale lens” - after a while of operation, I can say that it turned out that you just need to wait a second - and stabilization is restored.
