Review on ๐Ÿ  Ultimate Penn-Plax Clear-Free Under Gravel Aquarium Filter for 20-29 Gallon Tanks โ€“ Fresh and Saltwater Safe! by Rachel Mercer

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great filter. Save your $ and buy it!

Experienced fish breeder with 7 aquariums, of which there are more. Few companies still make them and I applaud Penn Plax for carrying on the tradition. Affordable, reliable, efficient and low maintenance. Another common brand uses a domed top for riser covers. These are people with air, releasing a "bubbleโ€ about every minute. Penn Plax has the best shape for flow and stillness. Aquarium filters are like politics. Everyone has their own opinion, but very few do their homework. The classic UGF has been a mainstay of the hobby for half a century. Why (almost) not? Because you don't have to buy cartridges, media packs, impellers or anything else! Business doesn't make money! It fits well with anything weighing 55g or less and ideal for 29g or less. The only reason not to use this is if you want a sandy bottom or an aquarium with dense vegetation. Tip - don't bother putting the panels together if you're running a riser on each corner. Carbon cartridges really don't help much because they contain very little carbon. Run an air-only unit and you'll be amazed at how easy filtration can be.

Pros
  • Wide range
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
