Review on πŸ”Œ Sabrent Premium 4 Port Black Aluminum USB 3.0 Hub with 30" Cable for iMac, MacBook, PC - Black (HB-MC3B) by Ryan Gilliam

Nice hub but don't use with power supply!

I bought this hub and it works great. However, attached USB drives will not transfer at full USB 3 speeds. This is normal when the hub is not powered. So I bought the matching Sabrent power supply (PS-5V4A). Increased transfer speeds. I was happy. But when the hub is plugged into the PC and the adapter is plugged in too, it causes some strange behavior. On my XPS laptop, this means that other devices connected to my USB don't work when booting. Sometimes HDMI, sometimes my keyboard, etc. The behavior is constant (random). On my desktop the effect is that it doesn't load 90% of the time. Press the power button and. Nothing. Turn off the hub, start the computer, plug the hub back in. Uncomfortable. One could argue that it could be a BIOS setting (although I couldn't find a setting on any of my devices that would help). I suspect the power is returning to the connector and causing confusion. But that's just a guess. It's a good hub and for the money I paid I'll probably keep it for myself. But I'm disappointed that Sabrent didn't notice this during testing. Because I'm a fan of higher transfer rates for copying virtual machines. But I'm disappointed that Sabrent didn't notice this during testing.
