Review on πŸ”Œ 12V Car Wireless Remote Control Battery Switch Disconnect - Latching Relay Anti-Theft System by E-Kylin, featuring Electromagnetic Solenoid Valve Terminal Master Kill by Adam Roman

Revainrating 5 out of 5

An elegant solution to the battery drain problem.

I am very impressed with this switch. This is a very clever and (on the surface, at least) well thought out solution to the battery drain problem. We bought it for a plow dump truck that gets occasional use and has a long history of battery drain. It's a wiring nightmare with all the extra plow and lighting wires spliced together and we couldn't trace the source of the leak. While a simple manual battery switch would have worked, we have a remote starter that allows us to start and warm up the truck before plowing, and a manual switch would mean trudging through the snow, cleaning the hood, and flicking the switch into the engine bay throw before each use. With this switch, we can just press the button to connect the battery and then press the button to start the truck. Everything from the house. Much more beautiful. The only thing that bothered me about driving this route was that the switch failed in the off position causing the truck to stall. An annoying inconvenience when I'm at home with tools and can bypass the switch in a few minutes of work, but a real problem when I'm out of town trying to talk to my wife about the process over the phone. Accordingly I bought a built in knife switch and some short battery cables and spade lugs and wired them up to both sides of the electrical switch as a bypass. If the switch ever fails in the off position, we simply close the breaker to bypass the electrical switch and reconnect the battery, and open it to disconnect again. The switch comes with clear connection instructions and is easy to set up. However, some will find it difficult to find suitable mounting locations, and wiring can be a bit of a rat's nest. I decided to install the switch, receiver and bypass switch on a small piece of the board. Not only did this give me a convenient mounting surface next to the battery, it also made the wiring shorter and a bit more manageable. (See photo.) A note for those ordering additional remotes (sold separately from Revain): you'll need to open the receiver's white plastic box and access the pairing button inside to connect the additional remotes. The description on the remote page lists the steps to pair, but it doesn't say that if you press and hold the pairing button for more than 5 seconds, you can switch from two-button mode (the lock button disconnects and the unlock button connects) to single. Button operation (battery is disabled unless you hold down the release button - in other words, the switch doesn't snap into the connected position.) I accidentally got into this mode when trying to pair my additional remotes, and thought the switch had failed. When I contacted the seller to replace the switch, he told me what the problem was and how to replace it again. It would be nice if they sent full program information along with the switch, or at least additional remote controls. The red LED pairing indicator is hard to see in daylight, and it's easy to accidentally switch modes if you press and hold the pairing button for too long. All in all a great product so far. As a previous reviewer pointed out, it's a latching relay, so it doesn't consume energy keeping the switch open when the battery is disconnected, which is a big deal. It uses very little power to power the receiver. Will come back and change the rating if the switch doesn't hold up over time, but so far I'm happy with it and the seller was quick and polite in helping me figure out a programming issue.
