This jewelry magnifier comes handy to carry in my bag when I go shopping for sparkling things for my sweetheart. It shows a lot more than I thought it would, and once you get the hang of it, it's easy to use. This is a 30x magnification, so what you see is 30x larger than usual. You hold it against your eyelid by the lid and lean on it with the back of your thumb. Then bring the object you want to examine close to the loupe at a distance of Β½ to 1 inch until it comes into focus. I put one hand over the other to fix everything and keep both eyes open. Professional jewelry loupes typically have 10x magnification and the diamond grading report is based on what can be seen with a 10x loupe. This one will show more since it's a much higher magnification, but there's a trade-off. The higher the power, the smaller the field of view, the shorter the focal length and the shallower the depth of field. Basically, it's harder to use, so higher magnification isn't always better. There are two LEDs on it, which in my opinion are too bright to inspect jewelry. Ambient light seems better, at least to me, but it's good to have flashlights to see other things. It comes with three LR927 batteries installed and there is also a small double pronged key to open the battery compartment. I will lose it and I think it would be better to do it with slots. Dremel will fix it. My main issue with this magnifier is that the lens is acrylic and not glass so it's easier to scratch. But it's clear and I think if I just use a microfiber cloth I'll be fine. The second thing you need to know is that this is a single lens or "singlet" loupe. Jewelers use a triple lens or "triple" loupe that corrects distortion and color issues that this loupe doesn't have. But if you are not a professional jeweler, this one will do. I'm not a professional jeweler, but I want to know what I'm looking for when buying jewelry. This loupe works well and is more than adequate for checking jewelry, collecting stamps and coins, and general low power microscopy work. Benefits + 30x magnification is more than enough to inspect any piece of jewelry (most jewelers use 10x magnification). + Very inexpensive. a tiny microscope that you can carry in your pocket. Cons: Acrylic lenses are easier to scratch than glass. Hope some of this was helpful.
