Review on ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Exploring the World with Garmin eTrex 30 Handheld GPS Navigator by Chad Sorensen

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great device has a steep learning curve!

This GPS comes in three price levels: I choose the most expensive because it's a lifetime investment. I am retiring soon (God forbid!) and plan to do a lot of traveling to remote areas on public lands and the like. I tried it on a 10-day expedition in Big Bend National Park in Southwest Texas. It definitely tracks where and (when) you are, where you've been, both horizontally and vertically, and has many, many features (like telling you how much time is left until sunset, etc.). I see him full of potential; However, it won't stop you from getting lost right out of the box. I went through the quick start guide and kept the device handy while hiking, regularly pressing the buttons; learn through practice. However, I would not deviate too far from the path at this point. The literature that presents Big Bend tells you to carry a compass and GPS and know how to use them; smart advice if you plan on roaming the desert! Bottom line: like any other computer, you need a book to really learn how to use it! (Even a full downloadable user guide won't help.) I ordered Outdoor Navigation with GPS from Hinch, Steven W.; Paperback by Revain based on customer reviews. Also The Complete Idiot's Guide to Tourism. Might need to take lessons too. I spoke to some people who have off-piste experience, people who know how to navigate with a compass and a map. You probably need to master these skills, then the GPS will pay off. Question: Can I master the navigator or does it just turn out to be an expensive toy? For now I'm giving it 5 stars based on its apparent potential; But I will have to update this review when I have more experience with it. Incidentally, the maps offered for download by Garmin are limited to a few large trails (Appalachia, Pacific coast, etc.)
