Yes it's just an extension. But most importantly, all 18AWG wires and all 6 wires are included. That means it delivers the same amount of power as an 8-pin cable. It also makes the extension a good deal compared to much more expensive alternatives. Note: The only reason 6 pins carry less current is that the original spec only had 5 wires in a 6 pin connector. You can verify this by looking at the power cord. There are only 6 wires and a jumper that separates the 2 wires into 2 additional pins. Also, the two extra pins are only grounded.
