Review on πŸ”§ Universal Automotive Overhead Valve Spring Compressor Tool by 8MILELAKE - Engine Removal, Repair, and Installation by Tony Guernsey

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Difficult to get to work - not used regularly.

This tool was used on a Chrysler 3.8 v6 engine. I don't recommend this tool at all if you intend to use it for more than one job. as others have pointed out, became very widespread. I had to compress it to a smaller size to fit the valve springs I was working with. The handle fell off on first use and several times thereafter. However, it is easier to store. Compared to others I've used before, the knob is very difficult to turn. Will bind as soon as you start twisting it. The best tools have no problems to begin with. The tool needs clearance to reach the springs, so recessed springs will not work with this tool. Bottom line, he did his job without breaking his legs pulling the springs. I ended up using Channel Locks to turn the spring compression screw after the knob fell off a couple of times. I feel like it was designed for softer, larger valve springs than you would find in a regular car. Maybe closer to being used on a tractor. Only buy if you have room for a valve spring that will fit a tool, you really can't afford better and don't plan on doing this job on a regular basis.

Pros
  • High test results for grip and durability
Cons
  • Not as thick as others
