The lower part (main water pans) is fine once cleaned and the strong plastic smell removed. I have other similar large silicone cube molds. But I only bought these particular ones for one reason. This was due to the lids, which appeared to snap securely into the tray with a "tongue and groove" design. The lid fits the rail, but doesn't resist it at all. There is no latch and it doesn't need to be pushed or pressed. It doesn't do anything at all to latch the lid in the slightest. The lid fits sluggishly into the groove and that's it. If you're just going from the sink to the freezer with the trays, shaking the water inside the tray itself is enough to pop the lid off. That's how loose the lids sit on these bowls. And if something in the freezer hits them while you can move food, the lids pop off easily. The lids themselves do not serve the purpose I bought them for. My other existing trays have lids that snap around the edges and I bought these thinking they would be much better and much more convenient. Unfortunately, in reality they are even worse. I will only use them because I have them now and don't want to deal with returns. If you get the impression that the lids on these bowls are even a bit tight, you'll be disappointed. They don't work at all. I only give 2 stars because they make ice and the ice is easy to squeeze out. But that's all.
