Review on StarTech Com Internal Multi Card Reader Support by Ricky Mills

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Very poorly made - 3 slots failed within 2 years

I received this reader to read various types of memory cards that I use in my various cameras. I wanted to clean up my office a bit and not have USB media hubs plugged into the front of my workstation. BAD1) From day one, the front USB ports didn't work, although that wasn't a big deal as the workstation had front USB ports. built-in. '2) About a year later, one day, the XD card reader just shut down completely. It didn't matter either, since most XD cards come with an adapter that fits the SDHC slot, so I started using an adapter for this medium. 3) The last straw was that the SDHC card slot stopped working about two years later. This is the main media type I use in my cameras, which meant that this reader was now a completely useless workstation accessory. At first I kept getting a file copy error when copying the contents of the SDHC card, then it just wouldn't read the cards. Now I'm back to the USB media reader attached to the front panel. The only thing that still works is the CF reader, which I rarely use. 4) Another problem with this reader is that the CF card slot is very shallow, which means you have to be careful when inserting the CF card, otherwise you could easily bend a pin. CONCLUSION Unfortunately, there aren't many readers for 3.5" drives, but I'm sure there has to be something better. It's also a USB 2.0 reader, so even if it didn't break it would still be obsolete by today's standards. I recommend avoiding this reader at all costs and make sure you buy a USB 3.0 reader if your workstation has internal USB 3.0 ports; This greatly improves the speed of copying files. It probably would have taken longer with moderate usage, but after a photo shoot I need to copy hundreds of files that make up gigabytes of data, and the file copy process needs to be reliable and consistent throughout the process.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
