Revainrating 4 out of 5

Smooth sound, slightly emphasized highs, more than most

This is a good value for an outdoor speaker. Apart from slightly accentuated highs and reduced bass, the performance of this class of outdoor loudspeakers cannot be surpassed. For the time being I hooked them up to a Sherwood stereo in a room for evaluation purposes and here are my observations compared to a set of traditional large three-way speakers. First, the volume isn't great with the same amp power pumped into it (it's a left and right channel comparison with AVX on the left channel and 3-way on the right), so efficiency shouldn't be as good. like my 3 way, which is to be expected with smaller crossovers and only two speakers moving about half the air. The AVX isn't overwhelmed by the big 3-band, it makes itself felt in the music mix, so it's holding up well. So I would call it a good performance. Second, the bass isn't as pronounced as some reviews suggest. It's smooth and dips a bit in the music mix compared to the mids and highs, but performs better than expected for a 6-inch midrange. A 6 inch speaker is not a woofer in my opinion. I've never seen a 6-inch speaker perform well in the low end, especially when, like this pair, they contain a lot of the midrange. 6 inch speakers should never be called woofers, once you get to 8 inches you can start talking about "woofers". It's more correct to call it a 6" full-range speaker. Anyway, I digress. The bass comes out at certain times with certain music, depending on the resonance of the 6" speaker. I even changed the phasing of one of the speakers in the hope that there was a phasing issue on a pair of speakers, but the bass response got worse, not better, which is normal. This means that the polarity of the connections from loudspeaker to loudspeaker is correct. They can become more responsive over time, which is typical of speakers that are initially too tight, but with practice their frequency response flattens out a bit and they sound better as the cones start moving more air. The tweeters actually work and appear to "spit out" the upper frequencies rather than smoothly merging into them. If you put your ear just to the tweeter at low volume, you can hear this "spitting". Overall, they run smoother than most outdoor speakers in this class. The boxes are slightly larger than most, which also adds to their overall sound. While the wedge shape tends to color the music with a somewhat "plasticky" hollow sound, it's not overbearing. This can be more pronounced when used outdoors, as low frequencies tend to be lost with outdoor speakers. A muffled sound seems acceptable indoors. I thought of decorative rock speakers, heard them at theme parks and was impressed with their overall tone and bass when used outdoors in combination with a power amp, but the price of such outdoor speakers is a little over this cowboy's budget. The AVX speaker set is a good compromise. The fact that you're getting two speakers for a low price and decent performance is no mean feat in the affluent outdoor speaker market. Although this rating sounds critical, they are actually very good for their design and price. If they're truly weatherproof, then they're worth every penny. Overall I'm glad I found them and look forward to using them on deck this summer. UPDATE: After two full years out on my patio, now in their third year, they still work well, I've left them outside on the mount in inclement weather and they still play and sound good. I plan to spend more time on deck with them in 2021 than last summer. It just seems like we didn't get a chance to really enjoy the summer of 2020. So hopefully this year there will be more family gatherings on deck with these speakers in the entertainment center. This year my new setup will include more vinyl. I'm excited to see how they do in their third year.
