Review on Sony TCM-200DV Voice Recorder - Standard Cassette Model (Discontinued by Manufacturer) by Mike Lunde

When old technology is better than new

In some cases, old technology is even better than new. I used the DVR while learning a language; I would record my friend saying simple phrases in Japanese and then listen to them over and over again to improve my pronunciation. But there are several problems with the DVR. First, there are only three playback speeds; normal, slow and fast. This tape recorder allows you to change the speed - I think the information in the description is wrong, it seems you can speed up or slow down up to 100% of the original recording. forwarding is not possible. You can fast forward and rewind but you don't hear anything. Finally, if you get interrupted mid-record, or the recording ends prematurely, the DVR becomes inconvenient when trying to go back and add or overwrite previously recorded material. It's easy to do with a tape recorder. Of course, a DVR also has many advantages over a tape recorder, but for my purposes, the old is better than the new.

Pros
  • Voice-activated recording
Cons
  • Packaging is ugly
