carefully with latches

Just a word of caution - the new brackets are already fitted to the steering knuckles when you receive them. I made the mistake of prying these clamps too far and they lost some of their tension as a result. You don't have to remove the clip completely to install the spacers - just open it a bit to release the handle on the door. Once I figured out what I was doing I was more careful installing the second one and all went well. I used the brackets that came with the posts after "bending" the "damaged" brackets back into shape. This first post is now installed and working fine, but I'm a little concerned that the clamps are loose. I called the company and they sent me replacement strut tips with new brackets free of charge. I will install them as soon as I receive them. As for the racks themselves - I couldn't be happier. After replacing both struts, I found that only one of them failed (really failed). I was surprised the tailgate slammed so hard when one of the pillars was still working (though not as good as new). My advice is to buy these racks in pairs and swap them both out. After replacing the pillars, the tailgate actually opens by itself when I pull the latch in the door. It's almost like an electromechanical opener, which I don't have. Took me about 20 minutes to swap out both racks. It would have been quicker if I hadn't messed up the clips on the first one. The dealer quoted me $175 plus tax for each rack and $60 labor for installation. It's over $400. I made it myself for $60.

Pros
  • Easy installation in minutes with basic hand tools.
Cons
  • No power
