Review on ACDelco GM OEM D1405B Ignition Switch by Neil Bodell

Revainrating 5 out of 5

You have to lower the steering column to get to the switch!

I have a 1990 GMC P/U that won't start. It was a no click launch issue. At first I suspected the starter solenoid, then after a little diagnostics the ignition switch. Not the ignition you put the key in, but the switch that activates when the key is turned. The switch is located at the top of the steering column between the dashboard and the firewall. To get to the switch, you have to lower the steering column! The pillar sits in a bracket just below the dash. You will need to remove the underside of the dashboard under the pillar to access the two mounting screws. After removing the screws, carefully lower the column. When you find the switch you will find that the headlight dimmer switch lines up with the ignition switch! You must get the dimmer switch out of the way before you can unscrew the ignition switch! The switch has two plugs, black and blue which will need to be removed or disconnected, there is also a metal rod leading from the ignition switch to the switch, make sure the ignition is in the locked position. I recommend connecting the new switch first before attaching it! It took me 30 minutes to replace the switch. It was 95 degrees and very high humidity when I took over this car repair, it wasn't very comfortable but I was glad the old truck caught fire again! We are happy to answer any questions about replacing this switch!
