Imperfect solution

I've been using a set of NoMorFlats rigid foam inner tubes on my commuter bike for several years. They were heavy, difficult to assemble, and the foam absorbed energy, making the bike difficult to ride and causing broken spokes. I changed every spoke on the rear wheel 3 times. But I never had an apartment. These foam trays are better in several ways. They're pretty light and still have the pneumatic tube that distributes the shock to the wheel, which hopefully is easier on the spokes. They are also easier to install and only take a few minutes. However, they also absorb energy in the same way, reducing the speed at which you can move with the same effort. They reduced my speed by about 3mph, similar to NoMorFlats. It feels like always riding uphill or against the wind. It's okay if you're doing it for exercise, you'll burn more calories, and because you're moving slower you're less likely to have an accident. But it makes cycling a little less fun. I'll probably feel better after my muscles acclimate and I won't have to deal with plates anymore and I'll lose a pound or two.
