It's been a long time since I bought this device, but this week I pulled it out to set up a new wireless access point in my home office. I simply unwound the cable right out of the factory bag and carefully routed it from the router to the new AP on the wall and couldn't get internet through the AP, although everything else worked fine. Before I started troubleshooting the access point, I decided to try a different cable. I was able to find a long, standard Cat-5 cable in the trash can, and lo and behold, the hotspot started blinking and I quickly had internet. Very disappointed. I didn't use the zip ties that came with it, nor did I make any bends or pulls that might damage it. Obviously it just never worked and caused me a lot of heartache and frustration. A flat cable would certainly make the final installation look nicer, but at least that ugly blue Cat 5 cable works.
