Pull it to a comfortable grip, tighten the buckle and it stays in place. The belt can be shortened to the desired length. Simply unclip where it enters the buckle, loosen the retaining clip, cut the required amount, singe the end with a lighter or match to prevent fraying, slide back in and clip. I measured the length to be cut while putting the belt on and noted how long I would like it to be (leave long enough to go through the first loop of the belt). Then when I removed the buckle I measured the same distance (about 4 inches for me) and cut with scissors. Perfect for shorts and jeans.
