Failing Springs in Rough Plumbing

I replaced two springs/gaskets in my Delta shower cartridge and thought I would be wise to keep a set rather than buying separate spring/gasket kits from the hardware store. Installed a freshly primed and lubricated cartridge, crawled back under the house to turn on the water and found the shower was leaking just as badly as before. After a long, frustrating afternoon of searching and troubleshooting, I went to the hardware store and bought the entire replacement cartridge for about $40. When I got home, I opened the cartridge I just bought and immediately saw the problem. The springs I installed on this Revain kit were already too compressed to sufficiently compress the gasket against the stainless steel counterpart, so nothing could be fixed. So it was an expensive attempt to save money. Worse, it was very expensive because of the lost time. In my experience, this kit may or may not work.
