I bought this on Prime Day and was happy with the price and the reviews were great. What I got was a little less. First, there were no documents in the box. No warranty card, cookbook or instructions as advertised. The box was a little worn but as it only had one tag and was not in another box I wrote the ID off due to wear and tear during transit. I hand washed the plates thinking they were a bit thinner than expected but I didn't think twice. What. Monday July 5th was what I called Waffle Day! After reading all the reviews on Amazon, I plugged it in and turned the temperature setting to dark before even making the dough. My favorite James McNair Buttered Waffles recipe takes about 20 minutes to make. 20-30 minutes after I turned on the iron, it was ready for its first waffle. I took 1 cup of batter, lowered the temp to 3, watched the ready light go out and waited. Seemed a lot slower than my previous iron but about 5 minutes later the ready light came on again (no it wasn't recessed and I could see it from across the kitchen) and I popped the lid on in anticipation. The waffle was about half the size of the plates (there were no instructions so I assumed it was a cup of batter) and it wasn't crispy or browned. I set the temp to dark/high, closed the lid again and again waited for the light to be ready. About 2 minutes left. Not so boring, a little darker. Let's see waffles #2. I closed the lid and again waited for the ready light and when it came on I opened it and this time added 2 cups of batter and closed the lid. leave the temperature in the dark. after about 5 minutes the ready light came on and i opened the device again. I could see the waffles were full size. but the brown color was only in the circle on top of the waffles. I closed the lid again with the waffle inside and waited about three minutes. The brown ring on the upper face was slightly larger but still white around the edges. I took out the waffle and looked at the back. It was almost exactly the right shade of brown, only the very middle and outer edges were less well done. Waffles 3 and 4 came out basically the same as 2 and my batter was run down so we sat down to eat. The waffles were delicious and were fully cooked (no raw batter flavor) although quite sluggish and pale in color. I'll trade them in for the same model based on all the other rave reviews because I think I may have gotten a lemon. We'll see and I'll keep you posted.
