We started with the training wheels and it definitely helped him get used to the bike. The training wheels don't have a lot of adjustment options, so they only ride at design height, meaning these training wheels are only a few inches off the ground. It's okay if your child is very off balance, but you'll quickly find that this slows down their progress (the training wheels are constantly making contact). Fast forward a few months and it's time to take off your training wheels. The bike is now 300% better and rides great. My son runs around this bad boy with his buddies all day. He rides much better without those training wheels - they created so much drag. The bike does not have a footrest, which I find to be a major disadvantage. Once the training wheels are detached, they are simply placed on the ground and not used. I've searched the internet for a Mongoose replacement part but nothing comparable. Mongoose doesn't even sell a stand. When researching footpegs I found many newer versions that mount to the rear frame, but I wanted the classic center mount (which this bike was designed for). It was hard to find but I finally found it. Given the price of this bike, I didn't have to shell out another $20 for a footpeg.
