Review on 🚘 Ford 8L3Z-6M280-B Transmission Solenoid by Vince Preston

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Fixed the engine knocking issue at idle.

Worked great in my 2008 Ford Expedition EL 5.4L 3V engine. Around the 100,000 mile mark I noticed an intermittent check engine light that comes on on long drives. Of course I didn't do anything. it's gone. rzunimag. About 103,000 miles after the engine warmed up, it started rattling and sounded like a diesel truck idling. It shook a lot. The check engine light was on all the time. Went to AutoZone to read my codes. They told me that he read "Cam Position Snesor" over and over again. Bought some camshaft sensors. I exit the truck, I don't mind swapping out some of the cheap $15 sensor parts and I think they might go bad anyway. So I replaced both camshaft sensors, that's not the reason of course. After further googling, I find out about VCT solenoid valve problems on these 5.4 liter engines. Makes them sound and shake like semi-cars when decelerating from around 1200 rpm. Stop signs, fast food, and slow driving through parking lots make it bad. I HOPED I could just pop open the seal, pop in a Torx 27T screwdriver and replace both in about 30 minutes. Of course not! The 2007-2013 Expeditions are complete, so you'll need to remove the valve cover to get to them. So be aware, if there isn't a lip on the gasket around this solenoid for a screwdriver to push it out, you'll have to remove the valve covers to get it out. It doesn't even fit through the hole, I spent 1/2 day on it! I hope you don't. Long story short, after both valve covers were removed, the solenoids were replaced. Both were quite frightened. Put everything back together correctly and I reconnected the battery following the PCM relearn procedure in my owner's manual (basically idle the truck for a full minute with the A/C full on and foot on the brake) and the truck sounds great, gas mileage has improved, sound is like new! I think I saved myself about $1,000 after all that has been said and done. If you're one of the lucky ones like me who manages to remove valve covers, at least you can look at a few other parts that can go bad. Visit YouTube and the Ford forums. I hope this helps someone out there!
