I started with the regular size black antimicrobial cat litter. At first I liked him, and then I started hating him. First, it wasn't big enough; I had to empty a lot. (I have 4 adult cats and 4 litters). Second, the lid was flimsy and kept bouncing. And third, the part where you lift up to put in the new rod - it was difficult to open, it got stuck and eventually broke. Litter Genie XL solved all 3 previous problems. It's definitely big enough and much easier to use. The lid is fully removable, making refilling much faster and easier. I like that the bottom part doesn't open, so it's stronger. Anyone who complains that bags are harder to remove should use "light spatula" and/or have very little arm/hand strength. I use Fresh Step Clean Paws litter, the heaviest litter available, and have no problem pulling out full bags. Catching the bag on the cutter didn't matter either. The knife pops out so you don't have to store it in the Litter Genie or just be careful when picking your bags. That didn't bother me at all either, and I don't pick the bags carefully. I've been using it for over 2 months now and haven't had a single problem. (The original I had had issues within the first two weeks of use.) I would definitely recommend getting the Litter Genie XL, especially for those with multiple cats.
