Update: I despise this version! At this point I stop worrying about proper use, I take a new pouch, tie off the end and place it in the bottom chamber. When I remove the boxes, it's easier to just take out the case and go into the boxes without the device. When I put it back in, I simply pushed the crap into a smaller column before gently pushing it back in and pulling it out again. I have two Genies from the litter, Plus and XL. i like them both I use the smaller one near the third tray and this XL near the two trays in the laundry room. It does well in higher traffic areas.
