Pencil leads are harder and some are softer, none of the pencils in this set feel either too hard or too soft. I can use dots to paint small tiny spaces and I use longer sides for larger areas. The pens color evenly, they don't tear the pages of my coloring book, and the colors don't run or smear. and when my painting is finished, the colors don't bleed or transfer to my fingers. Also, many of the colors are beautiful and vibrant and they stand out in my photos. I can paint on top of each other, and a friend of mine (who paints as a hobby) told me that the correct term for this process is "blend". Any worn pencil can be sharpened quickly and easily with our electric pencil sharpener. I have a good sharp point and the lead wood was smooth and even. Being a beginner I have nothing more to add, but a friend of mine who has more experience in this hobby tried my new color Raffine. pencils. They think these are high quality crayons and about on par with their Prismacolor and Crayola crayon sets.
