So I bought these for camping thinking they were disposable. First, they are strong enough to be stored. From an environmental perspective, it's great to reuse them instead of paper products. The only thing I found to be a problem was that many of the bowls were too small for a can of soup etc. I was wrong, they fit in a whole can of Progresso soup. This makes it easy to put in the microwave. Yes, they can be used in the microwave, but as directed in the instructions, use the top rack when putting them in the dishwasher. The bottom plate is close to the heating element and may melt or warp. I put them in the dishwasher and they came out fine. This is a great set for dorms or camping.
