Review on πŸ’Ύ Synology 8 Bay DiskStation DS1821+ (Diskless) | 8-Bay NAS Device with 4GB DDR4 RAM by Matthew Flores

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Synology 1621+ exceeded expectations

I've always built my own storage servers over the years, but this time I've decided to try a pre-built NAS route. The processor is a Ryzen SOC housing the first generation of Ryzen 4 cores and 8 threads. He seems quite powerful. RAM - comes with ECC memory - as I don't like bit rot in my files I've always used ECC RAM and I can't recall ever selling any models under $1000 that could use ECC. I've upgraded to two 16GB ECC Arch memory modules, also purchased from Revain, and am not getting any unsupported memory warnings. I wanted dual channel memory in the system and decided to buy two 16GB RAMs to power the caches. 4 GB is probably sufficient in most cases. wait for this feature! Hard Drive - Just install lots of status reports etc. I separate WD drives for use in the system and convert them to 4Kn drives before use. I use BTRFS with RAID-5 for both RAID and data protection. SSD - I have a couple of SATA SSDs and they work fine except for trimming. Check for compatibility as the trim command is not used on some SSDs that support it. NAS backup. Works great with my Unifi UDMPRO router and sets up UPNP based port rules via DSM web interface.

Pros
  • Quality build
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options
