Upgrade from DS1517+. Super easy update. Much faster. More memory. The rest is the same assembly and quality. The default RAM is too small. Suggested unofficial upgrades for the budget conscious (note Synology has officially supported hardware if that matters to you): - 32GB RAM - may have a compatibility warning depending on manufacturer, can ship for <$200 total with no compatibility warning. Google "DS1821+ and/or DS1621+ ECC Ram Upgrade Options" to see a list of RAM with or withoutโ€ฆ

Synology 1621+ exceeded expectations

I've always built my own storage servers over the years, but this time I've decided to try a pre-built NAS route. The processor is a Ryzen SOC housing the first generation of Ryzen 4 cores and 8 threads. He seems quite powerful. RAM - comes with ECC memory - as I don't like bit rot in my files I've always used ECC RAM and I can't recall ever selling any models under $1000 that could use ECC. I've upgraded to two 16GB ECC Arch memory modules, also purchased from Revain, and am not getting anyโ€ฆ

Great little box NAS+

Still transferring files from my old DS409+ which will take a few days. However, I ran a quick read/write performance test. I'm using 4 WD Red 12TB drives in the SHR-2 which gives me just over 20TB and two slots are open for future expansion from my old 4 x 4TB red drives in the Raid-5. I'm getting 100-120MB/s read/write on the array (spinning disks, no SSDs), if you add SSDs it runs a bit faster, I'm also using 2 network ports in linked mode. Regarding the USB speed review comment. Sinology or QNAP? - NAS

This review is related to Synology DS1621+. I have just completed the full installation and configuration of my new 1621+. It took about three weeks to install all the software packages and configure all the settings, and while I'm still reflecting on some of the decisions made, I'm ready to write a review. I bought the DS1621+ in addition to the QNAP TS-453-Be that I bought almost a year ago to replace the QNAP TS-453 Pro whose motherboard died. This is my second Synology - my first was aโ€ฆ

Awesome NAS, wish I hadn't taken the plunge sooner

If you can afford the upfront cost, buy Synology. Comfort and ease of use are fully consistent with the price. You could build a more powerful NAS yourself for less money, but it would use more power, take up more space, and (most importantly) require more time/effort to manage. My previous setup was a Mac mini with a USB stick attached to it. This worked fine for about 9 years for the most part and I wanted to update the setup and thought it might be worth taking a look at some relevant NASโ€ฆ
