I walked right into 8 inches of water wearing these, and my feet stayed totally dry. Boots got soaked but my feet were dry. They're not very breathable and could get hot and sweaty inside, so finding the right weather to wear them in will be important. On a warm day (70s) I wore these for a hike of a few miles and I was comfortable most of the way. I took my boots off and could barely even feel the breeze through the socks, either. So they're better for cooler weather, or you could even wear these with hiking sandals. These should be very good in the winter under ski boots, too. I wear women's shoes size 8 (men's 5) and the size Small of these socks fit me, and if anything a touch large.
