I have relatively hard water with minerals although calcium is low. It takes about a month for a crust to form on top of the filters, where most evaporation occurs. Even with a crust, the filters will last longer than original Kenmore filters. The benefit of the Best Air filter is that it has internal metal support which means it retains its integrity better than the Kenmore when I clean it, usually just a water rinse and wipe. And even if I rarely clean them with diluted HCL, they still hold their shape better than Kenmore. I can use Best Air filters for most of the cold season with cleaning as above. Then I replace them for the next season. They are cheaper and more practical than Kenmore. I almost always use a humidifier in the winter. FYI, I use a piece of plastic about 30cm long in the humidifier so the floating container that holds the filters sinks better in the water. It helps a lot.
