Poor construction details revealed the solution to the mystery
The result is a small, narrowly sanded but unfinished wood. The design of the puzzle box is very important for its function as a puzzle. This box design was very loose and a poor fit making the puzzle unsolvable which I feel defeated the purpose of the puzzle box. Price is not always an indicator of quality, but it is in the puzzle box category. Another puzzle box I bought for $14 was excellent!
