Good if you are a good handyman.

After 6 years one of my remote controls is completely worn out. I took my other original remote and the broken one to a good lock shop nearby which I have used many times. In exchange, they cut out a new blade and programmed it for $90. Not bad considering it was fast and worked. I also didn't want to go back to my dealer and probably pay more. So I had this old remote control with a good blade and ignition electronics. When I saw a video on YouTube about changing the blade, I thought. I can do it. To do this, a number of problems had to be solved. First, the roll pin that holds the blade is a bit difficult to remove and requires a very small punch. Second, the roll pin slot in the new blade is slightly different than the roll pin slot in the old blade. This can be overcome by careful registration. I reckon it took about an hour. The programming guide was terrible. I was told on the website that there was no manual for my car (Malibu 2013). YouTube solved it. Here are the basic programming instructions: Start the car with a working key and let it run for about a minute. Then turn it off and start the car immediately with the replacement. Let them work for a few minutes and boom! you programmed it Yes, it's that simple. If you don't have a working key, you're screwed. Go to a locksmith or GM dealership and be prepared to spend some money.
