Review on Seagate ST8000NM017B 7200RPM 256MB Enterprise by Adam Nowak ᠌

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Not a bad product, quite normal quality.

1. The product came in a paper envelope + pimply packaging. Despite the sticker on the envelope "caution, fragile" - it would be nice to have a cardboard box on top of the pimple, especially since has such boxes. 2. There are no documents inside - no seller's paper check, no warranty card - nothing. 3. The product is a gray import, there are 2 stickers on the disc itself: "for sale only in China" and "manufacturer's warranty is valid only in China" - that is, Seagate's branded, cool 5-year warranty will not be. 4. Like all "corporate" Exos - hot, if there is no cooler or temporarily lying on the table - 41-47C when copying 1TB of mixed data. With normal random access and short write / read cycles - 35-37C. 5. Heavy - almost 800g; does not vibrate as much or noticeably even at peak load; the spindle spins up completely in an average of 23 seconds; Quiet, that with the firmware from the factory (SN01), that with the firmware ate SN02. 6. Firmware: do not read guides of the 2022-2022 model on the Internet, do not fool around with a bootable USB flash drive with mystery-core-linux and CLI-utilities, a GUI application is downloaded from the official site of Seagate, in which the firmware is done in 6 seconds in 2 mouse clicks, on the data disk. The disk will be unmounted for the duration of the firmware, so if you have already made it a system one, you will still have to boot from the USB flash drive. 7. Performance: on large files: 220 MB/sec - reading, 200 MB/sec - writing; on a bunch of small files - of course, variably jumps from 50 to 140 MB / sec. The 256 MB cache only partially offsets this. It is worth taking for backups, a media server, unloaded "home" servers, forcedly ventilated multi-cases in server racks You should not take it to a torrent rocking chair (it will be hot with a constant read-write !)

Pros
  • Large volume; 7200 spindle revolutions; quiet; fast and convenient firmware; smooth stop of the motor; helium in a hermetic chamber; the ability to enable the mode of ultra-slow spin-up of the spindle (requires Seagate Tools)
Cons
  • Gray import and, as a result, the absence of a proprietary 5-year Seagate warranty; lack of paper docks (check \ warranty card) from the seller; hot, active ventilation of the HDD bay is required; cannot be flashed in an already running RAID
