We've been using Taylor Instant Reading Thermometers for over 15 years. I always bought a professional model - there were always several pieces. This is an inexpensive consumer model but with a large text display which I like. The sensor is thicker, however, and doesn't taper upwards like the Pro, so it'll take a slower temperature reading than the Pro model. This is a bit annoying when grilling because you want to close the door as quickly as possible and have to wait 30 seconds. I used both at the same time and the professional model reads about twice as fast. Both are accurate. My experience is they last about 5 years or so. The battery should be changed about every two years. Eventually, moisture gets in and the display fades or simply cracks. Definitely like the Taylor brand as it is small and reliable. Personally, I would buy the professional model 9842 because I'm impatient and want to be able to operate quickly.
