Could have killed my family in the water!

I purchased a Pertronix 40511 40,000 volt 3.0 flamethrower along with a PertTronix 1146A igniter to convert my 1983 Mercruiser 3.7 470 to electronic ignition. This is the second time I have bought this pair. When I first set everything up the boat ran great for about fifteen minutes and then started to overshoot horribly. Luckily I had my tools and a platter of mechanical points with me. Fifteen minutes on the sandbar and I was pulling pipes again. I sent back the first set annoyed. In the end I decided it had to be an accident. Had to try again, I just wanted a good quick start and reliable electronic ignition on my amazing 3.7 470. I've owned the boat for many years and the only problems I've ever had was installing/cleaning points. So I bought this pair again, I was sure that I would succeed. I installed everything like the first time. I started the boat on the clutches in the driveway and turned the key to start the engine. Inverted did not shoot, but. The power cable from the electronic ignition board definitely caught fire. is burning right now It's an electronic flame so I put it out and it lit up again. I burned/cut my damn finger by grabbing the flaming wire and pulling to break the chain. Luckily the fire burned the cut made by the wire which I had to break. Those wires aren't that far from the fuel system, could be a lot worse. I'm not a master mechanic but I'm not an idiot either, something was wrong with my first one and something very different and dangerous with my second one. It could be the coil. At first I didn't know which wire was burned. Luckily it was a Pertronix cable and not part of my completely undamaged wiring harness. I'm very glad I don't buy or have a new wiring harness. Now the power on my boat is completely off. I hope he just threw the battery into the wire fire. I do not know yet. Maybe something else is damaged? The wire melted and burned inside the cap, burned out and melted outside the cap, only burned near the ignition coil. I will definitely never try that again. Instead, I'll just keep honing my mechanical spark gap setup and cleaning skills. I'll also leave an extra gapped mechanical ignition plate in the boat and that's it. That way I can turn them off if needed. If this fire happened while driving with the hood down, my entire family could have died on the water.
