Review on ๐Ÿ”๏ธ Petzl Leopard FL Ultralight Crampons with FlexLock Binding System - Perfect for Snow Field Zustiege, One Size by Jason Paredes

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Nice and light but the aluminum spikes wear out quickly

I bought these for my flexible shoes (sneaker boots) because the heel of my classic BD Contact Crampon was too narrow for a good fit (climbing shoes usually have narrow heels) and I'm concerned about the center bar (they have laces). One problem is that aluminum wears out quickly, and that's not theoretical. After two (probably obscene) outings, the ends of the crampons were rounded and I had to grind them with a grinder (after drilling with a file). I made a hack from the Danner review to smooth the edges of the cords, but this time I used a Dremel-like tool because I didn't want to remove the cords since they are sewn into a loop. Note that you can move the ropes so that the current wear points are no longer clipped. I also bought replacement cords from Petzl. Please note that they do not have anti-ballistic plastic plates (ANTISNOW) and must be purchased separately. Try On Tip: When using the "advancedโ€ tying method outlined in the instructions, do not tighten the straps pre-tensioned as this can unbalance the lower ropes. I'll try the Petzl Irvis Hybrid, they're pretty much the same except the toe box is steel instead of aluminum. But you need to change heel to Flex/Strap (T03A BFL) to make "Irvis Hybrid "Fl"". a version that Petzl does not sell. It would probably also be possible to replace the Leopard toe cap with a metal one (T03A AV) after the aluminum wears out. Update: The Petzl Irvis Hybrid crampons I just bought, which have the same heel as the Leopard, now have factory beveled cord holes. Looks like Petzl solved the problem.
