Broad Benefits

Derwent is known for producing high quality art materials. Recently, they have also been increasingly recognized for their technological innovations, particularly in the use of different types of water-soluble pens. This collection offers a taste of quality and technology. It also offers an extremely versatile material set at a very reasonable price ($25 in my case). You get the usual set of graphite, charcoal, and charcoal pencils common in any sketchbook. The quality of the materials is very good - graphite pencils are easily distinguishable in tone, like charcoal. The color tone of the pens matches the pens perfectly. As an added bonus, charcoal sticks are pretty durable. I have sharpened them with a Faber hand sharpener and they have not broken. What really shines in the collection are the additional accessories. You get a good selection of vanilla water soluble graphite, but you also get a couple of Graphitint pencils, pigmented water soluble graphite. Used dry, they behave like graphite pencils, the pigment only produces muted colors. But add water and it turns out a vibrant colour, although not as vibrant as a watercolor pencil. The set includes several colored pencils for drawing. They're fairly opaque like chalk pastels but much more controlled like crayons. They also blend much better than chalk pastels. One of the great things about them is that their opacity makes them suitable for dark wearers. The colors make them well suited for things like animal skins or sepia portraits. Completing the collection are several tinted charcoal pencils, including some white ones, very useful for adding white accents. With this collection alone, you are well equipped to tackle any charcoal or graphite project you desire, adding a range of subtle colors to the palette. The price makes this a tremendous value, especially if you want to explore a range of mediums.
