With all the drill bits and fasteners in my workshop, I always choose the wrong size. Through trial and error, I sometimes switch between a project and a set of tools half a dozen times. You may think I've learned my lesson. OK, I have. My grandfather always had a locksmith scale in his jacket pocket. I haven't started wearing overalls and pocket protectors yet. I like to keep my high quality measuring equipment clean and tidy, so my scales, calipers and microphones are not always near my usual mechanical tools. That's why this composite caliper performs so well. It's inexpensive and doesn't look like NASA M&TE. I can leave it on a workbench or in a toolbox without feeling like 8 generations of grandfathers are turning in their graves before me. A quick test with other calipers shows that this set is accurate enough to use a drill or wrench to size. The composite construction eliminates the worry of surface rust if I leave it wet. It has a thumb slider instead of a thumbwheel and has no lock. But hey, I have fancy tools when I need to measure something that close. I had to drill out a rivet last night and got the right size bit for the first time. Win!
