I bought this remote control to use with an outdoor ceiling fan that my neighbor gave me as a gift. I installed it on my desktop and just used the engine and light. Wiring is easy and on the stand the remote worked well with all functions, fan speed and lighting. I tested all the features several times and was impressed by the smooth operation. The next day I completely assembled the fan and hung it in the garage with the remote attached for a full test before installing it on the porch. I did not put the radio receiver under the canopy, but left it open during the test run. The remote turned the light on and off with no problems. I've tried turning the fan on the "low" setting. Nothing. Then I tried setting it to "Medium". Nothing. Before I could do anything else, there was a loud popping/roasting sound accompanied by a stream of sparks and flames ejecting from the receiver unit and splattering against the ceiling pole where the fan mount was attached. I quickly turned off the power. Although the hairpin was blackened with soot, it did not catch fire. But honestly, I shudder to think how things would play out if the remote receiver were under an awning and not just next to the counter, but also the aging insulation, wood battens and decades of dust that is part of our porch ( The bungalow is 85 years old so yes there is dust in the attic.) Full disclosure; I'm not an electrician, but I'm 71 years old, son of an electronics engineer, and very familiar with the basics of electrical installation, having done most electrical work myself for over 50 years. Look at the photo of the receiver I posted. after the event described and make your own decision. Personally, I would consciously avoid using a product with such obvious product quality issues. This is clearly a security risk. I have never seen such a dramatic and dangerous failure of an electrical household component in my life. My advice? DO NOT BUY THIS REMOTE CONTROL!
