Not as magical as I'd like

The detector comes in a nice unmarked black box which can be used as a carrying case, although that makes it almost twice as bulky like without the box . It includes an 8cm (connectors not included) USB to Micro USB charging cable. The viewfinder has a size of 2.7 cm x 6.5 cm. The entire device measures 4.2 x 10.1 x 1.8 cm. It has a wrist strap and is comfortable to hold and use with a convenient left , right and right hand mode / power button . The mode/power button toggles between fast flashing, slow flashing, steady on and off. The accompanying manual recommends (shown in the image) that you operate it by holding the viewfinder close to your eyes with the 12 LEDs facing away from you. In addition, it is recommended to scan the entire room from a distance of 4-5 feet and turn off all other lights if possible. In my testing, I've found that the light reflections from the LEDs, and sometimes the overall pattern of the LEDs, become quite obvious when viewed. almost everything is reflective. Specifically, glass, chrome, and LEDs commonly found on TV remote controls. That's good because camera lenses are often made of glass, and IR LEDs like those used in TV remotes often go hand in hand with hidden cameras for night vision. So it can definitely make hidden cameras more obvious. Unfortunately, it also makes a lot of other shiny things clearer, so you still have to pay attention to all the details in the scene to tell if there's a camera lens somewhere in all those other reflections. What I found even more unfortunate was that when testing with real cameras, the lenses weren't obvious unless you looked directly into them. I was able to get a good reflection from a 150 degree lens from about 3 feet away and nearly 10 degrees of offset, but it was less than a pinprick and easy to miss on a quick scan. I found that other typical overhead lights and the light in the monitor room did not have a significant impact on scanning performance. This can be an advantage when using red LEDs and a red viewfinder. Having said that, I'm not sure what the use of red light is. Of course, this thing is useful for detecting hidden cameras, but as far as I can tell, the greatest utility comes from illuminating dark areas and forcing you to search the premises systematically. I suppose the savvy among us could do the same with a flashlight of almost any color. However, note that I still have very little experience with the detector. I have no regrets about my purchase and will keep experimenting to see if I can use it to learn to spot hidden cameras more easily. Compared to other detectors with smaller viewfinders and fewer LEDs. I don't have anything that compares, but it seems obvious to me that people with glasses are much more comfortable with them. More LEDs almost certainly means more light, which intuitively feels better and increases the likelihood of a good reflection, and those 12 LEDs are very bright.

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • Could have opted for a newer model
