Before I bought Thule straps I used regular straps with these hooks (don't know exactly what they're called). The hooks didn't quite match my posts so I was always nervous about leaving them attached. Then I came across these Thule straps. I love her! They are more than long enough and stay taut once secured. Due to the size of my small kayak and small car, I can go around the bar twice (yes, not enough!). They're expensive compared to the hooks you can buy at Walmart, but once you have them, throw the rest away! All you have to do is wrap them around the trunk and boat, secure them, and then tie the excess cord in a knot so it doesn't hit your car. I also learned how to tie a knot (loosely) at the free end when removing the straps - this prevents the cover from tearing off and having to search under your car or worse, under someone else's car! Good luck, keep rowing.
