The fan controls are TERRIBLE – and I mean unnecessarily gross

What was Leviton thinking? If they simply copied the light controller as a fan controller, they would have a working product. If only. Fan control is schizophrenic when connected to - fan. The fan runs fast-slow-fast for low-medium-high settings. BUT - if you connect the light cable of the device to the fan, you get a very smooth, infinitely variable, pleasant motor control. If they just put two "lightweight" controls in this thing, they would have a great product. But they didn't. Let's get back to fan control. I'm an electrical engineer so I did some experiments. It cannot handle an inductive load, i.e. a motor. A voltmeter will not help to fix the problem: for example, due to inductive feedback, it will show an average of 170 V. So I wired the bulb in parallel with the motor (so there's a more resistive load, and we get 66 volts on low, 120v on medium, 120v on high - and yes, fan speed should be different accordingly - when no bulb is in parallel. But who needs a three setting device that switches between low and high levels and pays to turn on a bulb to make it work, so bad (though better than without) old fans controlling different motor windings could feed us (dem Customers) give an electronic drive a stepless speed control - a real advantage over three settings - if they just copied the lighting control scheme for the fan.And knowing that some fans make audible noises (resonances) at certain speeds, the stepless control gives the buyer the opportunity to avoid noise. If only .Leviton be produ kt has to try before going into mass marketing .And be a little more creative than just copying the three speeds of these ancient dinosaurs. I believe the marketing buzzword for this is "innovative".

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • A little wrinkled
