I'm going to combine a review of two items as they are related and therefore I don't need to write two separate reviews: 1) iFi Power Adapter 2) WAudio W3900 Power Conditioner. After the usual audiophile settings of my mid-low system (Teac CD Transport, SMSL DAC, Schiit Freya+, Parasound Power Amp, Focal Chorus) I decided to try some power supply settings as I knew it could improve the sound, or maybe also vice versa. snake oil. The iFi power supply arrived first, so before installing it I played and listened to one of my favorite test tracks and then connected the power supply to my DAC. Wow the difference was significant and I could easily hear the butt was a lot meatier and firmer. I was surprised what an improvement it was! I couldn't tell any difference in the highs and that was fine as I felt my system was too heavy (bright) anyway so this change was a step in the right direction. A few days later, the W3900 appeared. I listened to my test track again, then unplugged my entire system from a cheap surge protector and hooked everything up to an air conditioner. Surprise: Again, the difference wasn't subtle. This time the air conditioning affected the sound differently. It brought all sound instruments more harmoniously into focus, which led to a significant improvement in the sound image. It seemed like it was done by cleaning up what appeared to be some low-level musical details that were scattered/floating throughout the soundstage. Leaves the music very clean and concentrates the arrangement of the musical instruments on the stage. So both experiments failed! I then decided to read what one of the YouTube reviewers had to say about voltage regulators being inherently "current limiters" and therefore degrading the performance of a power amplifier. So I selectively disconnected my power amp from the "filtered" part of the air conditioner and connected it to the "unfiltered" part. BOOM, the music is less focused again! So, there you go, all my components go through the air conditioner filter outlets. I'm a lucky tourist. My conclusion is that PSU settings are NOT snake oil, with the following caveats: 1) Your speakers or room acoustics aren't maxed out - yet have the added ability to detect improvements. For example, if your room's acoustics are so poor that even if you improve the actual sound quality, the room may not improve. then any real sound improvement you achieve won't be apparent in a room with poor acoustics. (In my experience, speaker placement and room acoustics are the two most important and significant sonic adjustments. Once you've solved those two things, move on to smaller adjustments like wiring, power supplies, etc. 2) Second circumstance. If you don't see the power supply setting, then you're dealing with a super high-end system, already optimized to the maximum. A slight change in diet is not noticeable in this case and can even slightly worsen the sound. With those two conditions aside, I think you'll get great results and have a lot of fun playing with these PSU settings!
