Game changer for me

I've used a mask and snorkel for fun, for at least the last 50 years, and spent over 20 years as a professional scuba diver, as part of my job. I've always used a traditional mask for snorkeling and diving, and have had my share of leaky seals, fogged glass, broken hardware, and mouthfuls of salty water. This new generation of full-face masks with an integrated snorkel really does represent a breakthrough, in several respects.I was intrigued when I first saw integrated full-face snorkel masks like this one a few years ago, and have finally decided to give one a try. I'm glad that I did. There are many design features that really do make this snorkel mask a game changer for me. I particularly like the separate, sealed compartments that separate your eyes/cheeks/forehead from your nose and mouth. This minimizes fogging that can be caused by inadvertently breathing into a traditional mask through your nose, making it hard to see in the water. It also keeps any water that leaks in around your chin away from the glass that you see through. That's important to me, because I have a beard that does sometimes let water leak into my mask. The seal on this mask is a soft, doubled-over flap that does an admirable job. I have a thin face and it is often difficult to find a mask that seals well. This one does. And it does a surprisingly good job sealing over my beard, which I try to keep short. The air comes in through the top of the mask, and travels through one-way valves to the lower chamber where your mouth and nose are. Exhalations exit through purge valves near your jaw. This system works well, but I wish that the air opening at the top of the mask, where the snorkel enters, was larger. It sometimes feels like I have to work too hard to get a big breath of air, which can lead to a feeling of claustrophobia and, for some users, I expect, panic. A bigger airway would probably alleviate this. There is a place to install a go-pro style action camera, which I will be using for sure. It's a thoughtful addition that will simplify saving and sharing my adventures. The snorkel has a float valve that keeps water from flooding the mask when you dive. This sort of valve is great for playing near the surface, but probably not reliable for deep diving. You can't use this mask for scuba diving, because there's no way to get your regulator into your mouth. For regular snorkeling though, I have a new favorite mask!
